Chiefs 5 Mid Michigan Storm 3
Coming off a tough conference loss to the Bay Area Reps on Wednesday night the Chiefs hoped to sneak into Gladwin Friday night 2/17/12 and calm the Storm. But the Storm kicked up her heels and just about blew the Chiefs out of town. The Chiefs looked strong in the 1st period as they jumped out to a 1-0 lead 3 minutes into the game with a goal from Jake Elmore and an assist from Eryn Eustice. About a minute and half later Eustice popped in a goal of his own after a nice pass from Freshman Chris Demeuse who received a pass from fellow Freshman Josh Stempky who had just rebounded his own shot. The Chiefs were putting a lot of pressure on the Storm throughout the period. Storm goalie Zack Woods turned away 11 shots to keep the score close as the Chiefs out shot the Storm 13-3 for the period and went into the 1st intermission with nothing but clear sky's ahead. Well, sometime during the 1st intermission the Storm changed the Chiefs weather plans for the day and they came out like a Gulf Coast hurricane and blew up and down the ice as though the Chiefs were not there. At 12:37 of the 2nd period Storm Captain Alec Gary cut the Chiefs lead to 2-1 with a goal and assisted by Brad Ehlers and Manny Sheets. The Storm controlled play much of the period and with 5:51 to play in the period Daniel Rathburn tied the game on a two on one rush with an assist from Devin Griffus. With 4:01 left in the period Devin Griffus put the Storm up 3-2 with an unassisted goal and the Chiefs were trying to find shelter from the Storm. Chiefs goalie Nick Watson stopped four other 2 on 1 rushes to keep the game close. With 1:31 to play in the 2nd period Eryn Eustice put in a rebound off a shot from Jordan Yost to tie the game and that brought some calmness to the hurricane. The 2nd period ended 3-3. The Chiefs came out in the 3rd period and played as though the weather conditions improved in their favor. Like the 1st period the Chiefs seemed to control play in the 3rd period though the Storm was not about to quit. It was a well played period by both teams and with 10:35 to play in the game Stan Swiderek stole a pass in the Chiefs offensive end and drilled what turned out to be a game winning wrist shot, unassisted to put the Chiefs up 4-3. Nick Watson turned away several Storm shots down the stretch to keep the Chiefs on top. With :36 to play in the game Jake Elmore hit an empty net goal with an assist from Eryn Eustice to make it a 5-3 final.
Chiefs 2 Cadillac 0
The Chiefs rolled into Cadillac on a snowy Friday Night 2/10/12 to take on the Vikings. Despite the weather a nice crowd showed up to witness a well played hockey game by both teams. Once again Chief goalie Nick "The Wall" Watson stole the show and their were no nicks in his armor. The Chiefs opened the scoring at 12:09 of the 1st period when Jordan Yost caught a pass just outside the blue line and skated in with a defenseman hanging on his right arm and took it to the goal, made a move at the top of the crease and put a wrist shot in to make it 1-0 Chiefs. Stan Swiderek assisted on the play. Cadillac had multiple scoring chances in the 1st period as they out shot the Chiefs 15-4 for the period. But Watson looked like he was playing in front of a net the size the mini-mites use. Nothing got by him and it was 1-0 after the 1st period. The Chiefs put much more pressure on Vikings goalie PJ Nemish in the 2nd period and he looked as big as an elephant standing in front of the net to the Chiefs. It was all goaltending in the 2nd period and the scored stayed 1-0. The Chiefs seemed to control play in the 3rd period as the young and fast Vikings appeared to be a little frustrated with "The Wall" Watson stopping everything. At 12:36 of the 3rd period Michael Castagne skated down the left side of the ice and took a hard wrist shot that fell behind the goalie and Dylan Wilkinson dove for the puck and poked it in to put the Chiefs up 2-0. The rest of the period the Chiefs played very defensively as Chiefs Senior forward Eryn Eustice played a shift on offense then dropped back to defense for a shift and then back to offense. Eustice logged a lot of ice time in the 3rd and Nick Watson continued to make quality scoring chances look like no chance at all to score for the Vikings. The Chiefs recorded their 17th win of the season which ties the record for wins in a season for the Chiefs with three regular season games to be played. The Chiefs are 17-3-1 on the year.
